My son turned 4 yesterday & I always get excited when someone close to me has a birthday, I love celebrating them. But with my son, it’s always such an exciting moment &meach year. My son’s birthday & life, in general, will always remind me of my journey & how birthing him ignited so much life & desire to want more for myself. Kids generally drive you to want more so you can give them more, but for me, my son really reminded me to start living for myself, in order to be the best mum to him
I have always wanted to talk about my experience of being a young mum & starting a business, so this post has been a long time coming. If you have read my previous post or my social media posts you will know that I resigned at work with no plan what’s so ever when he was just 8 months. I have spoken about this in a youtube video so you can watch it to know more about my startup journey. On this post, I will be sharing 4 things that came about for me when I embarked on the motherhood journey
GIVING BIRTH TO MY SON IGNITED SO MUCH CREATIVITY WITHIN ME
I have alway been a creative person, I highly belive I was born with this – heck we are all born with creative genes within us. Motherhood & being a mum needs you to not take yourself too seriously. This little human will drive you to make silly faces so you can make them laugh (which brings so much joy) & also needs you to come up with ideas to entertain them to keep them busy.
I found myself bursting with ideas on how to solve problems & issues friends & family were facing in life or business, things just came easily to me & was enjoying every moment. Seeing myself deal with these issues & seeing them work, drove me to want my business even more & drove me to plan & execute what my business is today.
I STARTED DREAMING BIG
Soon as I held my son in my hands, I knew I wanted to give him everything, give him the best. This meant I needed to reach higher. This is why resigning from my job was so easy, especially after I realized there was no growth and this job was killing my spirit which was impacting my energy when I got home.
This still drives me even today to never give up, to think ahead, know whats next for me & my brand.
I FOUND NEW FRIENDS—AND MENTORS—IN OTHER WORKING MOTHERS
The amount of amazing people I have met on my entrepreneurial journey, ever since I started my business have played a huge part in keeping me going. To see other mothers (some who are juggling more roles than me) inspire me so much. These ladies have become my circle of friends that I turn to when things get tough, we motivate each other & make sure we don’t give up.
These same ladies are also great when it come to making motherhood a pleasant journey. We share so much tips & advice beyond our careers.
MY FAMILY COMMITMENT MADE ME MORE COMMITTED TO MY CAREER—AND COMPANY
Even though I still live at home, with my parents (I know I’m spoilt & loving it) I have quite a lot of commitments, as I also have my own little family that we are building with my partner. For me there is so much at stake & so much that we are trying to achieve that I cannot just drop the ball or give up.
At this stage in my life, I need to make sure that I reach my goals, reach goals I have put in place for my kids, reach goals I have with my partner & also reach our family goals. I need to wake up everyday to make sure I don’t dissapointment not only myself but also my family. So my company, my brand needs my all in order for everything else to work out as planned & as desired.
I’d love to hear from other mothers, whether in business or employed full time, how your kids have impacted your career. I know sometimes kids can be quite the challenge & don’t always mean positive things, so I would love to hear about that side as well. Leave me a comment below 🙂
