My favorite #Girlboss lessons

So a few months back I finally got my hands on the must read book of 2016, #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso. I started the book and couldn’t put it down. It’s so interesting to read someone’s story and be able to relate to it. To be able to know that the challenges you face in life and while trying to hustle to make your dreams possible, is the same challenges successful people went through.

I learnt so much on how to handle life, believing in yourself and how to face business challenges. Throughout the book I jotted down all my favorite quotes that I related to and wanted to share them with you.

“The energy you’ll expend focusing on someone else’s life, is better spent working on your own. Just be your own idol”

I remember how I was always this person who wanted to fix and help people live their best lives. I’ve always been the best person to talk to because I seemed to have all the right answers. I was the big sister in the group. Eventually I kind of realized how I’m always trying to make other people happy and make sure they are pleased and tend to forget about my well being and happiness. When I finally told myself enough is enough and started focusing on me and bettering myself and loving myself, I started seeing progress and being happy.

“You combine hard work, creativity and self determination, and things start to happen”

When we grow up we look at life in such a way that we believe goods things happen purely out of luck. Then once you hit adulthood and reality kicks in we realize anything that you want you have to work hard for it. One needs to know their end goal and be determined to reach it. I also believe being creative and thinking out the box is such a bonus, because it will put you at an advantage to your peers or competition.

“When you believe in yourself, other people will believe in you too”

You love yourself first. You believe in yourself first. Then people will start seeing things the same way you do. Let’s not seek for validation from others in order for us to see ourselves as valuable human beings.

“If you believe that what you’re doing will have positive results, it will – even if it’s not immediately obvious”

Everything is a process. Things will always start out slow. I always say, as long as I’m progressing and not stuck at one point in my life then that’s all I need. Eventually you will reach that high point.

“It takes a special kind of stubbornness to succeed as an entrepreneur”

Entrepreneurship is one of the hardest things one can put themselves through. People think it’s all wonderful to run your own business but they don’t know the hardships one goes through. For me my stubbornness helped me to develop a thick skin because my family didn’t support or even understand what it means to be an Entrepreneur. No matter what they said and no matter how they tried putting me down, I told myself I won’t change my life plans.

“True success lies in knowing your weaknesses and playing to your strengths”

I remember when I started out I asked myself about my brand. What will it do and who will it work with. And as much as I would love to land huge accounts and work with all these amazing brands, I told myself I’m not there yet. As much as it’s not a weakness, but I kind of focused on what I know I’m really good at and where I know my strength lies. So when I work with anyone I perform and produce really amazing results which will attract the big brands.

This lesson is very important, because so many people think they can just dive into doing anything and everything just as long as they are running a business. But if you focus on what you know you are good at, the results will be really amazing and your brand will be a success. This also applies to anyone in the work place.

“Magical thinking is the alchemy that you can use to visualize and project yourself into the professional and personal life that you want”

I don’t know how many people do this but every time I jump into bed I drift away into this life I foresee for myself. I imagine having reached all the accomplishments and dreams I want for myself. I see myself in my dream home living the perfect life with my family.

I believe that when I do this and visualize what I’m working towards keeps me focused and on track. And the fact that I don’t just envision my career, but my family makes me quite excited about the life I will one day live.

“The more you know what you want, the less you’re willing to put up with what you don’t.”

I’ve always been the type of person who knows who they are, what they want and what they deserve. I remember how I just couldn’t stand supervisors at all my part time jobs cause they just couldn’t respect people below them and I couldn’t take stupid remarks or unfair treatment lying down. I always stood up for myself and if things didn’t change I just left.

So I know my path, I know where I want my life to go and if I come across things that are not aligned with my path I make sure to remove myself from the situation.

“No matter where you are in life, you’ll save a lot of time by not worrying too much about what other people think about you”

In our language we call this a “abantu bazothini syndrome!” We live in a world where so many people do things to impress other people. We are on social media to showcase how perfect our lives are and to prove just how happy and successful we are as to seek validation.

We get so distracted worrying about what people will think or say if I quite work and start a business. Or if I decide to date a certain person cause society doesn’t see it as abnormal match. Or even worse when we struggle to find the right job and cannot accept a part time job that will help us make a living at the meantime.

Do things for you. You know what’s best for you and what will get you closer to where you need to be. Let’s forget people and their judgemental remarks, especially because no one is perfect, some people are just good at hiding their flaws.

“It’s not cool to get drunk on your own success”

This is simple, always remain humble!!

“Surround yourself with people who are engaged, honest & confident enough on their own quest to support you on yours”

The company you keep is so important. Being around other people who are focused and like minded like you means you will always be engaged in conversations that help you move forward. So many people are friends and all they have in common is the things they say about other people. Toxic friendships will not take you anywhere. Instead of talking about people who are minding their own, put all that energy in moving yourself forward.

I relate to this so much. I want people to know my work, for my work to speak for itself. As much as success comes with the attention, I really want to remain as someone who is behind the scenes of a brand or someones career. As long people are talking about a brand or personality I have successful put out there, I will be happy. So many people do into business to be famous, to be known and they get lost in that because they tend to drift from actually making their businesses successful.
