As I approach the third year anniversary of NT Comms, I am excited about the vast changes that have taken place within the business from last year. Not only have we occupied an office space full time, but I also dropped the
Growth is so exciting and comes with it’s new challenges. Ever since I started the business I had to master how to work on my own & be successful. Now I nead to master how to successfully manage a team (send help)!
With this new chapter opening, I thought I would close off the old chapter with a few of my tips to other
Good Branding & Marketing Is Key
I probably sound like a broken record by now as with every tip that I share I never leave this one out & is always top 2. That is because it’s really crucial and really works. The one thing I have always prided myself is how I branded myself & marketed myself online. Having these two elements in place, especially when you are starting out can really be helpful & also set you apart from your competition. So don’t be afraid to invest in your branding & marketing, as it can have great results.
When you don’t have a boss to stipulate working hours, you can easily lack behind when it comes to managing your time & schedule. As a business owner, there’s a certain level of efficiency that you need to have if you want to impress customers and clients.
When I started out I used to work from home, especially because at the time I needed to be home with my son. So I couldn’t get much done during the day. Instead, I trained myself to work during the night and because my son napped a lot during the day, I managed to also rest, so I didn’t exhaust myself. Then at a later stage, I started going to work at coffee shops, which helped drastically, because I would wake up as if I am going to the office & spend most of the day working from there.
Both these ways got the job done. Find your rhythm & the best way you can work to make sure you achieve all that you need to get done.
Don’t Overload Yourself
When you are desperate for work & especially money, you find youself accepting all & any work that comes your way. I did it too. The downside about overloading yourself with work, is that you take on too much and you end up not delivering quality work or even dropping the ball, which can affect your customer services.
Try and avoid this as much as possible. If you really need to take on each and every job that comes your way, create a work schedule and tell your clients that they are in a queue and their job will not be processed immediately. This mean you don’t lose out on any work, receive deposits for your services and also deliver good quality work.
Have a Trustworthy Virtual Team
When you are starting out & you cannot afford to hire or outsource you are forced to deliver on your own. But as business grows and your work load gets too much, please invest in a team that can help you with some of your business tasks.
A year into my business this is what I started doing. If I knew I couldn’t do something on time, I had a great team on speed dial to assist me with some of my client projects & even my business tasks. This allows you to focus on what you can but still not dropping the ball on other things.
It’s Okay To Take Time Off
After I had landed my biggest project last year, which had a huge workload and tight deadlines, my body crashed like never before. I was sick for days, but I still couldn’t stop and take care of myself. Eventually a close friend of mine called me out on this & told me to stop, because I will end up being bed ridden for days on end & I won’t attend to work, making matters even worse and she was right.
I eventually started a ritual in my work week of taking Monday’s off and I used that day to just sleep and it drastically helped with my health & also being efficient at work.
So I am here to tell you, it’s okay to take a break & please do not overwork yourself. Running a business is obviously all you can think off at that moment, but your business needs you to be in a good state to successfully take it to where it needs to go.
