Starting a blog is not rocket science, anyone who wants to blog can start their own blog and have no issues whatsoever. Being successful at blogging in the long run takes hard work and consistency. With so many people who want to start blogging I felt it would be great to share a few tips on how to start and make sure your blog grows and hopefully earn money from.
I started in the whole blogging industry back in 2011, when there were not a lot of bloggers in SA to learn from. Nowadays we have so many local bloggers that can inspire you and we can look for inspiration from when you start. It’s important to note that no matter how many bloggers can inspire you and you can copy their style of work, blogging becomes successful bY actioning the right plan and also by being CONSISTENT!
Being a blogger is not only available to people who want to blog about fashion. No matter what industry you maybe passionate about, be it music, food, DIY or technology, you can start a blog and be successful at it. Blogging is also not about getting free stuff, as a lot of people get into blogging for such reasons. Start a blog because you are passionate about it and also because you feel you have some great insight to share. If you are starting your blog with those reasons, you are already on the right track.
One of the first things I will always suggest before starting anything is having a plan. A plan will help you understand your blog, what you will be blogging about, your action plan and making sure you are successful with it.
Choose your web host and blog platform
Next thing that is important is to find a web host where you will host your blog and also the blogging platform you feel is best for you. This is a very critical part, because you need to be certain that your blog will always be live and visible and that you have no issues with your hosting in the long run. I have used Afrihost for all my blogs as I have never had issues with them and they have great packages.
When I started off in blogging I was on Blogger, but moved to WordPress because of better features and design. I recently discovered Squarespace, which seems to be a favorite with some people. You can do your research to see which one is best for you in the end, otherwise they are all great options. If you are not ready to start paying for a domain, wordpress and blogger offer free blogs, but the downside would be you don’t get to have a customized domain and unique emails, plus some templates need you to have your own domain.
Design your blog
There are so many free themes available on the internet both for WordPress and Blogger, you just need to take time and go through them to find the best one you like. If you want to buy you can also checkout Creative Market as they have some really awesome designs from different designers. The most important information you need to have on your blog:
- Your Picture and Your About Page – this way people know who is behind the blog
- Your Social Media links – your social media platforms are an extension of your blog, make sure people find you easy
- Your Contact – you can have your email address or a easy contact page for anyone who wants to contact you
- Create a blog design that is not too busy and that fits what your blog is about
This has to be one of the most important and only advise I would ever give to anyone who blogs. BE CONSISTENT
Creating content is hard, trust me I know. Blogging also takes up a lot of time and energy, so we struggle at times. Plus if you are doing this plus a full time job, its really a challenge. But you started blogging, got people to like your blog and want to see more, so it’s your job to keep giving them more. Remember you are not the only person who is doing what you are doing, so if you are not popping up on Social Media feeds announcing your new blog post every other week, we will forget about you or worse stop being interested cause you are inconsistent. So try your best to update your blog so you gain loyal readers. Also if you are inconsistent, you are decreasing your chances of working with brands.
So there you have it, my guide to starting a blog and being successful at it. I hope it encourages you to finally start and start right. If you have started I hope you pick up your socks, fix any issues you might have and continue successfully. Blogging can be a very rewarding process if done for all the right reasons and passionately.
